- The genuine replacement is available from Breville as a spare part and matches the stock portafilter exactly.
- Third-party options are plentiful: stainless steel portafilters with wood or metal handles, spouted or bottomless, listed as "54mm for Breville." The listing should mention the three-ear design or name Breville machines explicitly.
- Baskets interchange too. Any 54mm basket made for the Breville system drops into these portafilters, including precision baskets from specialty makers.
- Do not buy a 58mm portafilter, which is the commercial standard, or a 51mm one. Neither fits the Bambino's group.
Why brand-specific matters at 54mm
Portafilter diameter is only half the fitment story. The other half is the lug pattern, the ears on the portafilter rim that twist into the group head. Breville uses its own three-ear pattern, so a 54mm portafilter designed for a different brand can share the diameter and still refuse to lock, sit at the wrong handle angle, or fail to seal against the gasket. This is why reputable listings say "for Breville" rather than just "54mm." When a listing names the Bambino, Barista Express, or Infuser, the ears are cut for Breville's group and it will seat correctly.

The most common aftermarket purchase for the Bambino is not a like-for-like replacement but a bottomless (naked) portafilter. Because the Bambino is a popular first machine, owners upgrade to bottomless to diagnose channeling and improve puck prep, usually pairing it with a precision double basket, a dosing funnel, and a WDT tool. Many kits bundle all of these together. Owners report the heavier stainless third-party portafilters also feel more stable during tamping than the stock part.
The trap to avoid
Watch for two mismatches. First, some listings mix the Bambino into a compatibility list dominated by 58mm machines from other brands: confirm 54mm and the Breville name together. Second, check which basket you are actually using. Depending on region and bundle, the Bambino ships with dual-wall (pressurized) baskets, sometimes alongside single-wall ones, and the wall type is stamped on the basket's underside. If you move to a bottomless portafilter with a single-wall basket, expect your grinder to matter much more. Single-wall baskets need a capable burr grinder dialed in fine, and shots will gush without one. That is a grind problem, not a portafilter defect.
