The details
- Every full-height K70 uses Cherry MX or MX-style switches, so the stem itself is the standard cross mount. Fit problems come from key sizes, not the stem.
- Original K70, K70 LUX, K70 RGB, and K70 RGB MK.2: the spacebar is 6.5u instead of the standard 6.25u, and the bottom-row modifier widths are also non-standard. A typical aftermarket set will fit the alphas and most modifiers but leave the bottom row uncovered.
- Fixes for older boards: buy a set that explicitly includes a 6.5u spacebar and Corsair bottom-row kit, keep the stock bottom row and replace everything else, or buy Corsair's own PBT double-shot replacement sets, which are made for their layouts.
- K70 RGB PRO and later full-height boards: Corsair moved to a standard bottom row with a 6.25u spacebar, and owner reports confirm these accept standard aftermarket sets.
- K70 RGB MK.2 Low Profile and other Low Profile variants use Cherry MX Low Profile switches. Standard-height caps technically attach to the stem but sit wrong and can interfere with travel, so these boards need low-profile sets.
How to identify your generation
Do not rely on memory or the box. Check the model number on the label on the underside of the keyboard, then check one physical tell: measure or eyeball the spacebar against a ruler. A spacebar noticeably wider than the six keys above it together with narrow bottom-row modifiers is the older non-standard layout. You can also count stabilizer positions under the spacebar, but the width check is quicker.
If the label shows K70 RGB PRO, K70 CORE, or a newer name, you are most likely in standard-layout territory, but confirm the layout in the set's listing anyway. If it shows K70, K70 LUX, K70 RGB, or K70 RGB MK.2 without PRO, assume the 6.5u bottom row.
What owners actually do
The consensus workaround in owner communities for the older boards is a two-part approach: a standard 104-key set for everything above the bottom row, plus a Corsair-specific spacebar and modifier kit sold separately by several accessory makers. Some owners simply leave the stock bottom row in place, since mixed profiles on the bottom row are less noticeable there than anywhere else on the board. Corsair's own PBT DOUBLE-SHOT PRO mod kit is the clean single-purchase answer for their non-standard layouts.
The trap to avoid
Listings that say "fits Corsair K70" without naming a generation are the main source of returns. A set photographed on a K70 RGB PRO will not fully fit a K70 LUX, and a full-height set will ruin the feel of a Low Profile board. Match three things before buying: your exact model number, the spacebar width included in the set, and the cap height (standard versus low profile).
