- Vehicle side: any vehicle with a 7-way RV blade socket qualifies, provided the socket actually delivers 12V power, ground, and turn signals. Per CURT's documentation, a brake output wire from the vehicle is not required, because the Echo generates the brake signal itself.
- Trailer side: CURT rates the Echo for one or two axles with two to four electric brakes. Three-axle and larger rigs are outside its rating.
- It is proportional: an internal accelerometer senses your deceleration and applies trailer brakes to match, so there is no leveling or mounting orientation to worry about.
- Control is through the Echo smartphone app on iOS or Android over Bluetooth, one paired phone at a time. Gain and manual override live on the phone screen.
- CURT notes it works with low-voltage and PWM 7-way wiring systems, which trip up many traditional controllers on newer vehicles.
Where it does not fit
- Trailers with surge (hydraulic override) brakes or no brakes at all. The Echo only speaks to electric trailer brakes.
- Trailers wired with only a 4-way flat connector. The Echo needs the 7-way blade format on both sides, though a trailer can be rewired to 7-way.
- Vehicles that de-energize the 7-way socket: late-model Ford F-150s with smart trailer-tow power management are the best-known case. Depending on year and settings, the truck may only power the 12V pin when it detects a trailer and the right drive conditions, and can cut power in park. The documented fix is having an installer run a constant power wire from the battery, so check how your specific model year behaves before buying.
- Electric-over-hydraulic actuators: CURT's core compatibility statement targets standard electric drum brakes. If your trailer has an EOH actuator, confirm against CURT's current documentation for your actuator before relying on it.
The trap to avoid
Assuming a 7-way socket is a live 7-way socket. Plenty of vehicles have the socket installed but were never wired with the tow package, or power only part of it. Owners chasing phantom Echo dropouts usually find the 12V pin is dead or switched. Test the socket with an inexpensive 7-way tester before blaming the unit, and check the tow-package fuses if any pin reads dead.
What owners actually do
The typical pattern in owner communities: leave the Echo plugged into the trailer's 7-way cord full time, pair the phone once, and just verify the app connection during hookup. People who tow multiple trailers like that the app stores separate trailer profiles. The recurring complaints are Bluetooth range on long rigs and the smart-tow style power cutout on certain trucks, both of which are known and documented rather than defects. A locking pin or small padlock through the plug is the usual theft deterrent since the unit lives outside.
