- Shared: both are proportional controllers with an internal inertia sensor, both offer boost settings for heavier trailers, both are rated for one to four braking axles, and both use the identical Tekonsha two-plug connector, so the same vehicle harness fits either.
- Display: the P2 has a simple LED readout and reports problems as codes you look up in the manual. The P3 has a color LCD that shows output, battery, and fault diagnostics in plain text, which owners consistently cite as the easiest thing about it.
- Electric-over-hydraulic: Tekonsha documents both controllers as compatible with electric and electric-over-hydraulic systems. The P3 adds a menu setting that switches explicitly between the two brake types, while the P2 has no on-screen mode for it. Actuator makers also publish their own approved-controller lists, so check yours whichever you buy.
- Profiles: the P3 stores multiple trailer profiles, useful if you switch between, say, a camper and a utility trailer with different gain settings. The P2 holds one setup at a time.
- Mounting: the two differ in allowed mounting angles, with the P2 generally tolerating a wider range and the P3 having a narrower front-to-back window per its manual. In practice both mount fine under most dashes; check the diagram in the manual for your unit.
When the P3 is worth it
Three cases make the P3 the clear answer: multiple trailers with different settings, an electric-over-hydraulic trailer where you want the explicit mode selection and readout, and anyone who wants the controller to say in words what is wrong instead of blinking a code. The diagnostic screen catches things like a disconnected trailer or a shorted magnet circuit at a glance, which is genuinely useful on the side of a highway.
When the P2 is enough
One trailer, standard electric drum brakes, set the gain once and tow. That describes most single-camper and utility-trailer owners, and for them the P2 gives identical stopping behavior with fewer menus. The owner-community consensus is blunt: the braking is the same, the P3 just tells you more about it.
The trap to avoid
Buying either one for a truck that already has a factory-integrated brake controller. If your dash has built-in trailer brake gain buttons, adding a Prodigy is redundant and in some vehicles not even electrically straightforward. The second trap is skipping the actuator homework on electric-over-hydraulic trailers: both controllers are listed as EOH compatible, but the actuator manufacturers keep their own lists of approved controllers, so confirm your specific actuator against its maker's documentation before towing on either unit.
Swapping later is painless
Because the P2 and P3 share the same two-plug harness, upgrading from one to the other is unplug and replug. Owners who start with a P2 and later want the screen or the profiles commonly sell the P2 on and swap in a P3 without touching a single wire. That also means a used tow vehicle with either controller's harness already installed is ready for both.
