When do my grinder burrs need replacing?

Burrs wear out by the weight of coffee passed through them, not by age. Worn burrs crush instead of cutting, which flattens the taste and forces you steadily finer to hold the same flow.

How this works

  • The clearest symptom is having to grind finer over months to keep the same shot time with the same beans.
  • Chipped or nicked burrs from a stone in the beans matter far more than gradual wear. Inspect after any loud crack while grinding.
  • Flat burrs generally outlast conical burrs of the same steel because the cutting work spreads over more surface.

People also ask

Does grinding for filter wear burrs faster than espresso?

Coarser grinding does less cutting work per gram, so filter use is gentler. The weight of coffee passed through is still the figure that matters most.

Can I sharpen burrs instead of replacing them?

No. The cutting geometry is machined to tight tolerances and cannot be restored at home. Replacement is the only real fix.

How do I tell wear from a dirty grinder?

Clean it first. Old grounds and oil in the burr chamber mimic wear symptoms closely, and a proper strip-down and brush-out resolves a surprising number of suspected worn burrs.
