What dose fits my portafilter basket?
Baskets are rated for a dose range, and going far outside it causes gushers, chokes and headspace problems.
Fill in the fields above and the answer appears here.
How this works
- Headspace matters: too little and the puck jams the shower screen, too much and water channels around the edge.
- Diameter is the fitment dimension. A 58 mm basket will not sit in a 54 mm portafilter.
- Pressurised (dual wall) baskets ignore grind quality by design; single wall baskets are where dosing precision pays.
People also ask
How do I know my basket size?
Measure the inside diameter of the portafilter with calipers, or check the machine manual. Breville home machines are usually 54 mm, most prosumer machines are 58 mm, and small DeLonghi units are often 51 mm.
What happens if I overfill the basket?
The puck swells into the shower screen, flow is restricted and the shot tends to channel. You see it as a slow, uneven pour and a wet puck afterwards.
Is the dose rating printed on the basket?
Rarely. It comes from the manufacturer spec. Common 58 mm sizes are 14, 18 and 22 g, while 51 and 54 mm baskets usually run 7 to 14 g.
